Spent a few places in St John's hotels. Ramada has decent rooms for its age with some rooms more updated. No complaints there. The new restaurant Oak and Smoke has good food but can be pricey. They tend to charge for add-ons but at the Capitol hotel for the same menu item of same taste and quantity it's cheaper than the Oak and Smoke. Front Desk staff not very friendly I've noticed in my 2 recent stays. It's like they're not happy to be there for some reason. Restaurant staff are more upbeat.
Spent one night in this hotel. This is an older hotel, with an on-site restaurant. The decor in the common areas is dated, but well maintained. The bathroom and the flooring in my room had been updated, and was clean and comfortable. Comfortable king size bed. Welcoming reception staff. Breakfast was not included in the room rate, but I availed myself of the on-site restaurant.
Stayed here for over a week. The room itself was comfortable and clean, but the hotel definitely needs an update — the carpets feel like they’re straight out of the 80s. My biggest concern, however, was the front desk experience. I called from Toronto on my way to ask about an early check-in. The staff member I spoke with didn’t take any of my information but assured me it wouldn’t be an issue. When I arrived, there were no rooms available early. My partner is a Diamond member with Wyndham, which is the only reason we chose this hotel, but the service did not reflect that level of membership. The front desk agent was argumentative and dismissive throughout our interaction. When I asked about upgrading to a suite, I was told, “It’s not as nice as the room you’re going to,” which was surprising since I’d stayed in that suite last year and knew otherwise. When I asked if changing rooms would affect the rate, he laughed and said, “No, you’re using points.” I reminded him that only three of our nine nights were on points and that we were paying for the rest. He also claimed at one point that he couldn’t find my reservation, only to locate it a minute later. I’ve stayed in many hotels over the years, and this was one of the most uncomfortable front desk experiences I’ve had. It set the wrong tone for the entire stay. Unfortunately, I won’t be returning to this location
