Creatures is always where we go for our fish stuff. The staff that does that section is always really friendly and my son is always met with thoughtful answers to his never ending questions. We’ve enjoyed fish from them for years and love seeing the new animals each time we visit for supplies.
I am going to preface by saying this review is meant to be for positive feedback and improvement and not to trash one of our few well stocked stores in Vic, that carry a range of live tropical fish. My family are new to aquariums, I purchased a 33Gal tank (not from store) with plants etc but no fish. Kids and I were/are very excited about setting up our own home tank, enjoying the learning experience and growing in confidence / competence with this hobby. I totally understand a store is not there to provide free advice however I found it very difficult to engage staff on what i needed to buy to maintain and grow my tank. what were the best first fish to get, anything i should be aware of etc.. the store was mostly empty the first time we visited. We had to chase down the subject matter expert on fish and it was like prying teeth.. i didnt know what to ask and he was less than forthcoming on helping us navigate the initial steps. Once again, I get it, your staff are not there to run a "teach me about aquariums" session but i would have hoped some basic probing questions on what we wanted to achieve, the types of equipment i needed, the best fish to consider etc. in the end i ended up purchasing some items i really didn't need and missed some items i should have purchased. Similar experience when we went back a week later to get fish.. I felt i was chasing the staff in order to ask questions about the most appropriate fish and how to care for the ones i was buying. In the end I kind of winged it. Fish appear healthy so thanks. Long post to say, I have now spent about $400 with the store.. I know i have many more things we would like to buy but I find myself looking around for alternate stores to establish a relationship with as that is what we were after. A trusted a knowledgeable supplier to support our entry and growth into an expensive hobby.
I initially called them inquiring about getting a bearded dragon for my kids. I looked them up and noticed they took in certain animals needing a home. I spoke to Ty initially and he sounded busy. But that didn't stop him from helping me over the phone. I even asked about Iguanas and he was going to and did ask me some questions. At the end of it they did have an adult female bearded dragon looking for a home. He held the dragon for me until my son and I were able to pick her up. Which was an amazing experience for my son. And Ty was very thorough and above average in service. They were kind enough to also include Lizzys basking rock on my way out. I had some health concerns about the dragons teeth, being new to bearded dragons and he talked me through it. I appreciated it as he got straight to points. I didn't find him or any of the staff there rude, just busy. But they still dealt with me once they were available with courtesy and respect. Ty actually went above and beyond for this dragon and ensured me that I could bring her back if we had concerns and weren't positive on her health. I had her checked out by a vet who happened to be her previous vet. She was healthy and good. Ty went above and beyond during all this and I appreciated it quite a bit. The other gentleman in the reptile department was also helpful and you could tell he was knowledgeable by the lengthy conversation I had with him. All in all my experience with critters was very positive and reassuring. I would and will definitely go back! Thank you Ty and Comrade for all your help. Thank you to the woman who initially took my call and all the above average service I received for a busy place of operation(quite normal in these times I'd say).
I recently visited this store, and honestly, the experience was disappointing. When I came in, everything seemed fine at first. I went to the counter to ask about the product I was looking for, but the two women at the front were just laughing and chatting with each other. They didn’t pay attention to me at all. When I asked if they could help me, they just told me to find another staff member, but no one was around. They kept talking and ignored me completely. The only person actually helping customers was the guy taking care of the fish section. He seemed to be working all by himself and had about five customers waiting for him. It was clear that he was overwhelmed, and yet none of the others bothered to help. It really looked like he was doing all the work alone – maybe even just a part-timer – while the others stood around. Overall, the service was basically zero. If you need help or advice, you’re stuck waiting for that one guy, while the rest of the staff doesn’t even try.
