I wish I could give NO STARS! Unfortunately my experience dealing with this institution was horrible. I attended the Notre Dame of Maryland University’s allied health open house on 11/11/23 located in Baltimore Maryland. The open house began at 9:30am and I arrived at 10:08am. Please note that I’m from Silver Spring Maryland which is an hour away. Upon my arrival, I was greeted by two representatives in the Knott Science Center lobby. I was given an informational packet for my program of choice and directed to where I should meet the Dean Kathleen Wisser. To my surprise, there weren’t many attendees. Other than myself there was another prospective student who was there with her young daughter. I was told I would be seen after the other prospective student which I totally understand since she arrived before me. I waited about 25-30 minutes. For the entire duration of my meeting I was dismissed, ignored, and my time was simply not valued. Within a few seconds of meeting, another prospective student arrived who inquired about the PA program. (Please note I was interested in the accelerated bsn program and Kathleen is the dean and associate professor of the school of nursing). To accommodate the other student, Kathleen stopped our meeting to assist the other student. By doing so she made various phone calls and walked with the other student to find the representatives that were previously in the lobby. This went on for about 20 minutes. After finally contacting public safety, Kathleen suggested that the other student wait until she received a phone call back regarding PA program whereabouts. At this point Kathleen continued her meeting with me for about 5 minutes until the other student asked to join. Kathleen eagerly accepted and directed the focus on her. A few minutes later a group of people came to our area to eat breakfast. They were asked what informational section they were coming from and one answered PA; and Kathleen was told of the location. Kathleen once again left my meeting to walk the other student to her desired program. When Kathleen finally returned, she commented “oh you have a lot of patience”. Although that comment was off putting, I tried to continue the meeting. I explained to Kathleen that I currently hold at masters degree in social work and may have some qualifying prerequisite courses. In response she gave a very condescending and unwarranted comment by saying “My daughter is a LCMSW and only makes a certain amount of money so that may be your cap in salary”. Following that comment, the remainder of the meeting was rushed. We exchanged contact information and I was given a tour of the nursing classrooms. The following Monday, I received an email from Kathleen which also included Amy Stauffacher and Emma Nicholson who I assume ore admissions advisors. I sent two follow up emails which have been ignored by all parties.I recieved a phone call about 2 weeks ago and explained all that has been happening and was promised to be contacted by a supervisor and further discuss admission requirements; never happened. I followed up with 3 phone calls and with no response. In all, my experience those far has been horrible. I would hope that my race isn’t a determining factor but due to the culture of society that notion is very much relevant. Hopefully others are treated differently.
