Our family stayed here before the renovation and the transformation is incredible! We have eaten here recently a number of times now and the food has always been excellent and reasonably priced for the overall quality. The service is efficient and the manager, Martin couldn't be more friendly, accommodating and attentive. Sunday lunch is a particular highlight! This pub/hotel is a gem for visitors and locals alike. Keep up the great work.
We visited the restaurant, so can’t comment on the rooms. We have been coming to The Kings Head, from the glory days ( around ten years ago ) up until recent ( and various different owners ). We had been here on and off since the new owners about a year ago, and although never blown away by the food, decided to give it another go. We were very pleased upon arrival that it was very busy in the bar ( as we want this place to work! ) and sat down to order drinks and food. The pie dish at £19 looked a good option, so we both chose that. However, the pie was 75% pastry and 25% meat. We had trouble cutting into the rock hard pastry, which exploded across the room when we did. I think maybe it had been sitting around and what meat it did have, had shrunk? Anyway, the good point was, the meat we did manage to find was delicious. The bad point was, the rest was lots and lots of hard pastry. We made a point of telling the staff afterwards as was pretty disappointed. Shortly after, another member of staff came to explain the pies. Telling us, that was just the way the chef made the pies and there was nothing anyone could do or say to make him do them any other way!? We were quite taken back by this comment, as clearly he was saying we had nothing to complain about and chef was right. I would love chef to have tasted one of those pies that evening to confirm he felt all was good? Maybe the ratio of meat to pastry isn’t normally that bad, but on this night, it really was hardly any meat. It’s a shame, as otherwise all was good. But please KH, take constructive criticism as gospel from your customers, rather than your chef. Not a good idea, and we probably won’t be back for quite some time now.
We enjoyed a very nice Sunday lunch with beautifully cooked beef. My only problem was a lack of handrail by the steps to enter the building and down to the toilets. At 87 I had to ask for assistance to avoid a fall.
