I was a patient of Dr. Jones at Bardstown Family Dentistry for several years. Dr. Jones seated three crowns for me, one of them twice. One of his attempts was successful and appeared to have no issues, but the other two both had open margins (see photos of #19 and #31). This means that he had a 25% success rate with crowns in my case. There was also a crown that broke within a month despite being sold as "unbreakable," and the plastic temporary crowns they make at the office all came off within a day or two. When I eventually went to a different dentist, none of this happened. (Despite what I was told at Dr. Jones's office, the temporary crown is actually important because if it comes off, the tooth can move and then the permanent crown won't fit correctly.) Open margins on crowns are a serious problem that can lead to the death of the tooth. Dr. Jones didn't take radiographs (X-rays) as part of the crown seating process as he probably should have, so he might not have known that these margins were open - which is why dentists should always check, but of course some of them don't, since it saves them about one minute of precious time that they could bill another patient's insurance for. Seriously, it's extremely quick for them to check. When I told the office about these issues, they did give me a refund on one, but not the other, so I ended up paying over $1k out of pocket to have a different dentist redo it. One of Dr. Jones's secretaries, who was extremely nice, told me that she had been there for twelve years and they had never given a refund to anyone else in all that time and would not be doing so again for me. They did invite me back to the office to have the crowns redone again, which I appreciated, but for obvious reasons, I said no thanks. All of this is scary because who knows what he's done to other patients who will never find out because they only go to him. It is difficult to be upset at Dr. Jones or anyone else in the office. They are all very pleasant people. But this was shoddy, sloppy dentistry that was totally preventable and shouldn't have happened. Looking back, I should've listened to my gut instinct that there were just too many patients in the office at one time, and the services received were rushed. Please be aware that if you do get a crown with an issue at this or any other office and the office doesn't issue a refund and correction letter to your insurance provider, your insurance will deny payment when you want to get it redone (even though it was done incorrectly in the first place), and you will have to pay for it to be redone out of pocket or risk losing the tooth.
