I’ve been dealing with headaches, a sore throat, and then woke up with my face swollen to the point I couldn’t open or close my mouth. I started taking medication at home, but it wasn’t working. So, I called the insurance company, hoping they could help me see a doctor because I had no idea what was happening. When I spoke with customer service, I explained the situation, mentioning that even my tooth hurt and I can’t even identify the source of the pain as everything hurts. The representative told me I needed to see a dentist, but my policy didn’t cover dental visits. How could they decide over the phone that I didn’t need a doctor for what felt like a medical emergency? I wasn’t calling for something minor — I was in serious pain, and I had already tried to handle it on my own. I just needed to see a doctor to figure out what was wrong. The operator then insisted that anything involving the mouth is a dental issue and not covered. He even said if it was with him he would be seeing a dentist not a doctor. But the reality is, neither of us knew for sure what was going on with my health — which is exactly why I needed to see a doctor. To my shock, the representative hung up on me. Calling my insurance was my last resort. I wasn’t looking to waste anyone’s time or rush to a doctor unnecessarily. But instead of receiving help, I was left with more stress and anxiety. All I wanted was to see a doctor and receive the support I needed. Instead, the experience left me feeling unheard and neglected.
