Felt very rushed considering the nature of our business and paying alot of money for representation. Law clerk very curt and rude. Errors made on our home refinance that we had to contact mortgage company to correct terms etc...after close. Would love refund on fees but never will happen.

I contacted Wylaw for assistance with a fence line matter in Minden. Before committing and sending any retainer, Mr. Wyjad contacted the lawyer of the other party, which made me feel obliged to use him to represent me, despite the retainer being more than I could afford. Mr. Wyjad had no experience in fence line matters and allegedly spent “hours” preparing legal arguments, which were absolutely useless at the hearing (due to his lack of experience at these matters). While at the hearing, I was required to do all the talking as Mr. Wyjad did not have the knowledge required to answer the questions I was being asked about the situation. I was further disappointed when Mr. Wyjad tried to charge me almost $10,000 (he was only working on the matter for 1 week). He recognized how bad the situation was and said he would just keep my $5000 retainer. When I looked at his detailed billing, it was very clear the time of each entry was NOT accurate. Throughout the whole interaction with him (1week and he was busy 3 of those days), I had one 4 minute call and one 12 minute call. I emailed to ask for some of my retainer back, as there was no way in one week of service it was possible to spend my $5000 retainer. I was sent a clearly made up time sheet, for it to equal exactly $5000 so they could “keep” my money. Not only is the billing inaccurate, Mr. Wyjad had no hope of getting me a favourable decision at the hearing. He knew this after the hearing was over and even said, he had never been to one of these. Instead of doing the right thing and at least returning $2000 out of the $5000 of my retainer, as I suggested, he elected to keep it all, despite all circumstances. He should have been upfront and not taken on my case with his lack of experience but he took it as a chance to take a quick $5000 in less than a week. I wrote to his office clerk and she also did not seem to care about the fact that Mr. Wyjad was unprepared for what he was “retained” for. I believe he did not meet his duty and professional obligations set out by the Law Society of Ontario. I hope that he can re-consider his billing decision and return some of my retainer. I will update the review if there is any further information/resolution.

We are disillusioned with the judicial system as we are left with paying over $14K out of pocket lawyer fees (not even 50% of our total costs!) for a litigation case against another local lawyer who was sued for negligence in a real estate transaction. Probably would have been better off using a big city lawyer!
