Hav and Mar is a must do whenever in N.Y. This was my second time and it did not disappoint. Truly, this was one of the best meals of my life. We had the Dawa Dawa salmon and the Havatini. Dawa Dawa salmon had a mixture of amazing flavors the perfectly complemented each other. From the crispness of the salmon skin to the perfectly cooked salmon and the seared rice, this was perfect. Havatini pasta a flavor bomb. Pasta was perfectly cooked and the stew of the dish could be bottled and sold. Overall, the meal was stellar and the service was exemplary as well. The vibe was excellent and this is a great play to visit to celebrate a special occasion, or to go and hang after a day of work.
The food was delicious and we were able to experience a new flavor profile at this west side Manhattan Marcus Samuelson restaurant. The service was friendly, fun and very knowledgeable. Jay and Alexa made our dinner special. We tried the fluke ceviche and swediopien salmon shared plates to start. We then shared a whole fish branzino that came with four variations of toppings. For dessert we had sorbet and aquavit liquor to finish our dinner. Highly recommend Hav & Mar which means Honeycomb and Sea.
Summary: the food was not good. The bread basket: The injera is oily and flavorless. The shiro "hummus" tastes like cold and bland vegetable soup. Otherwise, the dish was fine. The crudo sampler: The tartare was great. The fluke ceviche was pitiful with the smallest sliver of fish constituting the dish and a one dimensional vinegar flavor profile. The swediopian was good. Octopus a la plancha: The absolute worst octopus I've ever had. Incredibly overcooked. Like chewing the bottom of a shoe. Very disappointing. Havatini 2.0: Delicious. Definitely the best dish of the night. Asparagus side: cold, to the point that the hollandaise sauce was solid. seems like they use premade hollandaise which is embarrassing for a restaurant of this purported caliber. Addis York: chicken drumstick was overcooked. really chewy. The doro wot was tasty enough. I would not go back.
Very interesting food and we will be coming back for more. Note that the sauce for the fluke ceviche is very strong and they don’t give you a lot of fish. The Havarti 2.0 pasta dish is extremely salty and difficult to eat. The black bass was excellent as was the biryani rice. The ice cream portion and taste was extremely disappointing. Atmosphere is pleasant and service was good. Will be back!
