Beautiful entrance and a lovely, medieval looking bar but very disappointing dining experience. My gluten free mum was very excited to have a fish and chips as most the menu was gluten free (yay!) yet when she then ordered was told it wasn’t available that day. Put on the spot to pick something else, she then tried to order the prawns - told not available again! Only inclined towards fish, the other option was a fish finger sandwich with gluten free bread - not the most exciting meal when you’ve gone out of your way to visit a historic restaurant on holiday so was extremely disappointing. If the menu is limited based on availability (we were there as it opened so not late in the day) then we should 100% be informed of the dishes not available from the get go! Especially a main dish like fish and chips. Staff were friendly but we weren’t exactly offered any apology or alternatives so just started our experience off very poorly! Drinks were great and the gluten free cheesecake did make my mum very happy so was grateful we finished off better than we started, but I would say it is expensive for what it is. A fish finger sandwich with crumbly bread and some chips is not worth £14 when the fish and chips is only a few quid more? Other than a nice looking front of house, there is nothing about the restaurant that would make me come back. Very disappointed and will not be a repeat diner.
We went for dinner here and found the food to be tasty but really tiny portions. We thought we’d try their breakfast on the Saturday and see if it was better which it was. We decided to go again on the Sunday. They had a prominent chalk board on the street saying breakfast served until 10am. Got there at 9am to be told they weren’t doing walk ins…the manager woman was so rude when my partner mentioned bringing in the sign in that case. Anyway found an amazing little cafe just near to there called the Tin pot and their service and food was amazing!
We arrived slightly early for our 6 PM booking, but even by the time of our reservation, our table was not ready. We had to go and ask about it ourselves, and were then shown to a space where people were asked to move in front of us. Even after that, the table wasn’t big enough for the 11 people we had booked for (almost a month in advance). We had to take initiative and ask on moving another table , people were sat there too, to make it work , awkward experience — something that should have been organised properly before our arrival. We were also required to preorder our meals a week beforehand, only to find that the menu available at the restaurant was much smaller than the one advertised online. While the food itself was okay — my burger was nice — it certainly wasn’t worth the £18 price tag. After finishing our mains, we waited nearly 50 minutes for dessert, which still hadn’t arrived by the time we had to leave. When it came to paying, each person was charged separately at the bar, and a £2 service charge was quietly added to each bill without explanation or an itemised receipt. I only noticed because I knew the cost of my meal. This hidden, non transparent fee, although small, is against guidelines for fair trading and transparency, basically illegal. Also it would have added up to £22 for the table — completely unacceptable, especially given the lack of service. The male bartender who handled the payments was quite rude and dismissive, which made the experience even worse. On the positive side, the female waiter who served us was very kind and clearly doing her best despite the poor organisation around her. The interior of the pub itself is absolutely gorgeous and definitely worth a visit — but I would strongly recommend not eating here, especially not with a large group.
Built in 1475 by the Abbot of Glastonbury to house wealthy pilgrims, it is a good example of medieval domestic architecture. The Abbot's house has been repurposed into a fine pub for many years. Good selection of beers and a good menu. Plenty of seating inside, extending beyond the bars. Friendly and knowledgeable staff.
