Customer experiences
This music school has provided me with a unique learning experience. My understanding of music was only at the level of liking it, with no knowledge of any deeper concepts. The vocal teacher here never put pressure on me; each class involved simple scale exercises and targeted practice for the songs I chose. Even though the teacher doesn't speak Chinese, after a few lessons, her pronunciation when singing was more accurate than mine. I am extremely grateful to Ms. Arina. You helped me overcome my fear of singing and showed me that it's something everyone can achieve.
Sent my daughter here for her first piano lesson 2 weeks ago and she's enjoying it! Thanks Miss Ivy for being patient with our kid and she can start playing a few melodies on her own now after 3 classes.
Not recommended at all. I requested two demo lessons for my girl. I had communicated with the teacher that my girl had one year experience in playing piano and I would love the teacher assessing her level before teaching her. I also emphasized that my girl is not good at Mandarin. I requested a teacher who speaks English. However the first demo lesson, teacher started from the scratch and was surprised with my girl's piano skill after half an hour. Ya, she finally got a chance to play the piano after half an hour. The teacher also spoke Mandarin all the time. My girl came back home and told me she had problem understanding the teacher. At the same time, demo lessons were extremely distractive. Many kids came and left the classroom during the classes. And you could hear others playing piano, pretty noisy. I provided the feedback politely to the teacher and decided not continuing the class. However, they just deleted me from the chat channel.
I’ve come here since the beginning of 2019, seen our classroom grow from a single room in our teacher’s house to an official storefront on 10th avenue, and will soon be part of the new school near Lord Byng. This has been truly one of the best parts of my life these past few years! First is the sheer ability of all of the teachers at this school. Not only are they clear in their teachings, they are accurate at gauging each student’s potential as well. Whenever I was confused on a certain concept (technique, musicality, etc.), Ms. Huan could instantly help me approach it in a different way, adapting to whatever could help me the most. I had planned to take my ARCT exam mid 2022, but Ms. Huan continuously believed that I could complete it much earlier. With her encouragement, what do you know, I passed the exam mid 2021! This is in no way to show off, but to simply show the efficiency these teachers have while still bringing out everyone’s true capability. To date, I’ve probably been taught by 6 of the teachers here. Each of them have their strengths and specializations, but all have such a strong sense of responsibility. My ARCT is again a great example. To be honest, I had started becoming dispassionate in the process. Without planning to pursue piano in post-secondary, my decision was to just take the exam to complete my “RCM journey” and get the certificate, and I wasn’t very hopeful about my results. This is where their responsibility shone through. Ms. Huan started having me send daily recordings of my playing, which she then commented on after her already full day of teaching. She was patient when I became frustrated, clearly pointing out what I could do better on. To her, the fact that I became her student meant that she would do whatever she could to her best ability for me to do well. For sure, anyone can say this, but I feel that Ms. Huan, along with the other teachers here, are some of the few that say it with full sincerity not only to me, but to all of their students. Of course, what is a school without a sense of community and spirit? I swear, the hardest I’ve ever smiled and laughed is in one of my theory classes here! It must be a combination of the teachers’ comfort and familiarity with a class, and just the general atmosphere, but I feel truly at ease when I come here. When online classes started, I dreaded it, but that turned out to be a hidden gem too. With classes being recorded, I now get to download all of my class recordings, and I’m only half joking when I say that some segments are better than anything on Netflix. The fact that I’m learning while enjoying classes this much, I feel, says a lot about the quality of this school. I never intended for a post to be this long… What can I say? There is just so much to praise about this place!
