Tevita was a breeze to work with! He was out the same day I contacted him to give me a bid on concrete and yard work. He listened to everything that I wanted. He articulated exactly what he was going to do and broke down the cost of everything. This was very different from every other bid we received from 3 other companies. Not only that but him and his team were professional, respectful, and paid attention to detail. Tevita was very patient with me changing my mind about things or adding other tasks. I will definitely refer him to all of my friends and family and any future projects I’ll need.
Reached out to discuss project details. The owner was very responsive, INITIALLY. We agreed on what was required to complete my project. When I followed up with the ownver after sending him my info, there was no response. He just straight up blew me off. Instead of telling me he could not do my project for whatever reason, he just ignored me. Extremely unprofessional and lacks best business practices knowledge. Would not recommend.
Not to code: City code for driveway approach depth is a MINIMUM of 6”. This cross section demonstrates a thickness usually around 5” give or take a little. In hindsight I realized the same occurred when the walkways and driveway were poured. Code is a MINIMUM of 4” of cement for those. But when I put 2-inch cement chairs up for the walkway for the mesh it often reached near the top of the forms. With the chairs the mesh should be in the middle at 2” and be no more than 1.5” from the top, and I had to dig or reposition many chairs in a lower spot to achieve that. Other pic shows damage done to house when he jack hammered the old cement out. No apology. No offer to compensate or fix what was done. When I asked for the fragments because I thought I could glue them back on with brick adhesive he said he hauled them off with the broken cement. Since it was just the local city cement dump I asked if he could show me where he dumped it so I could try to find the fragments. He said no. He also jackhammered my sprinkler line when taking out my walkway all along about a 3-4” section. I didn’t take a photo but I could easily dig it up and show the repaired section along the walk after I repaired that. Again, no offer to compensate or fix what was done. Not even an acknowledgement of what he did. (Maybe he didn’t realize what he did, but I don’t know how.) He said I have a leak and implied my nearby valve was leaking. I discovered it was jack hammered after the project was done when I went to address that. THIS WAS NOT EVEN THE WORSE PART. But if you want to know some good cement contractors, I later found Kim Bailey Construction to come do work on another site. He has over 30 years experience in cement work. He is the most honest and genuine contractor I have interacted with and has immense knowledge and experience in cement work. Last I knew, he has no website. He stays busy by word of mouth. Here are some recommendations: Kim Bailey Construction – Kim’s getting older but still going strong with his sons working with him. Aloha Concrete and Construction, run by Fiki – A very likeable and honorable man. His bid was thousands less. He has many years experience and a good, long history. He was more measured and practical in wanting to work with me on how to implement the project. I should have gone with him, my bad. I went with this bid because he was very assertive in assuring me that he would work with me to make sure the project was done as needed. That changed once he got the 60% up front that he requires. I was putting in an electrical heating system that needed to be in the middle or closer to the surface of the cement. I paid for a change order to take out 2" more of earth so a 2" insulator could be installed in the walk and drive. His workers only did that for the drive. When I pointed out the walk was missed and asked it be fixed he said too late. In a recorded call with him and the heating company he said his workers would lift the mesh in the driveway that the heating elements were tied to so it was in the middle. He said that is typical when using mesh for structural support. I would put up cement chairs in the walks. When poured, his contract crew did not lift the mesh. They trampled the walks the chairs were on, knocking them down. He did not tell them to stop nor to put the chairs back up. An assistant started placing the cement chairs back up and they barked at him that made the mesh too high. Soon as pouring was done he aggressively demanded balance of pay. I said after clean-up and all is done. He apparently needed the cash to get 2nd kid into private school so on his assurance he would do a thorough clean-up and wrap everything up, I paid. They hauled off a few big cement chunks. My neighbors saw me spend hours shop vacuuming cement debris off the lawn, and removing bigger chunks, palm size or bigger. Trenches along walks behind and where forms were, were not refilled. I had to get a trailer of fill dirt. If use this contractor, ensure 4" depth everywhere, not just along forms, and 6" in approaches.
