I had my colour done by Georgie, a curly cut from Nicole and my hair diffused by Destiny last week. First thing I noticed- the salon interiors are gorgeous! All the staff are so friendly, attentive and I felt really pampered. All of my desires/concerns for the outcome of my hair were listened to which is such a breath of fresh air; I haven't had my hair done in years due to having negative salon experiences (I have 3c/4a hair). All of this makes me feel really confident to return to Melanie Giles again in the future☆

I had a great experience at Melanie Giles.. a razor cut by Mel herself, such a change for me and always normally go for such a boring style, so glad I took the chance to add in bangs, super fun style! Fluffy, bouncy and just so easy to style. I’m beyond impressed — thank you so much 💛

I'll start my review by saying it's a nice looking salon. It's very spacious and has lots of natural light. I had buzzed my hair seven months ago, and was waiting for it to grow out to a decent length before having a haircut. I did my research, and it seems that the 7 month mark is when for most people it gets pretty mullet-y looking. I had mentioned to Mel I had had pixie and bob haircuts for most of my life, and after having shaved my head, I wanted to get a style I haven't had before. I wanted a shag haircut, think Winona Ryder in the 90s. I felt it could be done with the length my hair was. It had short layers at the top by the time my appointment rolled around, with really long layers at the nape. I'm unhappy with the final result. I didn't voice this at the time as I am Autistic, and find it hard to stand up for myself. I had also had some bad news about a family member a day prior so was too tired to speak up. It turned out to be a pixie cut instead of a shag cut. I feel my hair growth journey is being prolonged. What I wanted was more cohesive layering at the back, but to still keep the length so it looked longer. I felt that Mel was not someone I felt comfortable with to talk to about any of these concerns during my appointment. She also made a comment about cutting out some grey hairs, and it didn't make me feel good. I felt she was a little pushy about posting on her social media. She asked if she could take a picture of some progress details. As I was masking, I felt the pressure and said yes, but I wasn't given time to think. The second time she asked if she could take a picture of the final result. I wanted to say no but didn't want to offend. I said that I didn't know what to do, and she said she could take a picture next time. I think she could tell I was unhappy with the haircut, but she made no attempt to remedy this, or ask questions. If she needed more details and direction, I would've been happy if she had asked. The cut's uneven, one half of has a longer layer than the other side. On a sensory issue, I wasn't pre-warned that the chair at the sink was a massage one, so when I sat on it, I was a little alarmed at it. She asked if I still wanted it on, and because I was masking I said yes, even though I didn't want it on. Overall, I'm not happy with my experience here. I really was so excited to come to the salon. Mel's social media has a lot of great pictures of short haircuts, and I wanted my hair to look as good as the people shown on her ig. I feel she missed the mark on this appointment.
