Customer experiences
We had our bathroom renovated by MJ Joinery in the summer of 2024. I would like to preface by mentioning we received a partial refund for their abysmal work, but who wants to be left with a bathroom you're not completely happy with after spending any time and money on it? Not to mention we also had to go through the arduous complaints process involving Edinburgh Trusted Traders before we were compensated. As homeowners we make the big decision to renovate a room because we want to increase the enjoyment, functionality, and practicality of our homes. None of the other bathroom fitters I’ve spoken to since will even touch our bathroom to fix the issues unless we contract them to do another full bathroom renovation from scratch so we're left with a bathroom we're completely not happy with. We believe the bad quality is down to poor project management on MJ Joinery's part and the work being subcontracted to other 3rd parties. Each subcontractor did their own task (plumber, tiler, etc) but there was nobody from MJ Joinery who checked up on the quality of their work before moving on to the next task. Our complaints were: 1. Grout haze – the tiler did not thoroughly rinse the excess epoxy grout, so this left clear streaks and chalky stains on the tiles’ surfaces. The grout haze detracts from the appearance of the tiles, making them look dull and dirty (yellowing instead of pristine). And over time the grout haze causes dirt to build up more quickly. 2. Wrong Installation of wall mounted basin – the plumber did not follow the manufacturer’s installation guide which clearly detailed the recommended positioning and measurements for the hot and cold-water supply lines, with one on each side of the waste drain (hot water supply to the left of the waste drain, and cold-water supply to the right of the waste drain). This causes the copper pipes to stick out so it’s an eyesore. Matthew tried to fix this by spray painting the copper pipes with black paint, but instead this made it worse because it looks like soot, and he also got black spray paint on the tile behind it. 3. Damage to our tiled front garden and adjacent entrance walkway – which was used as a dumping site because a skip was not provided. MJ Joinery also did not provide adequate protection for the garden tiles, so the residues created (by the tiler) from cutting the tiles had adhered. I personally had to purchase a pressure washer because the front garden was left in this state.
From my first point of contact with Matthew, the communication about the work from Kirsty and the laying of flooring by Luke and Tom, I could not have felt in better hands for my work. Friendly and efficient as a team, I am absolutely delighted with my new floors. So much so, that Im getting the team back to do some more work done already.Luke and Tom did a brilliant job, even dealt with an unexpected issue; removing a bath and replacing the floorboards all in the time frame they initially agreed. Fantastic team. Absolutely no hesitation in recommending them.
I recently had the pleasure of working with MJ Joinery, and my experience has been absolutely fantastic. From the initial consultation with Matt, who provided a detailed quote, to the skilled craftsmanship of Luke and Tom, every aspect of their service was top-notch. My first-floor Victorian flat had very uneven floors with significant dips and dives. The team efficiently ripped up the old floor, adjusted the joists, and laid a new floor, addressing all the issues perfectly. The quality of their work is outstanding. They were consistently professional, punctual, and a pleasure to work with. Kirsty keeping me up to date on email was great. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience. MJ Joinery will definitely be my go-to for any future projects. Highly recommended!
Matthew and his team worked at the loft conversion in our flat in Stockbridge, Edinburgh. They carried our all structural, plumbing, electrical, joinery, and plastering works. We are very pleased by the final outcome. Matthew and his team were very professional and excellent craftsmen. We highly recommend MJ Joinery to anyone who is looking to hire a competent team for their project.
