I took up multiple therapy sessions with Shelby and left feeling disrespected and emotionally invalidated. Yesterday, I came in sharing my emotional growth wins—growth that I told her I’ve wanted since our first session—yet she seemed almost annoyed by it. Her facial expression completely dropped and her responses lacked empathy and support. Looking back, I see that I was more emotionally considerate of her than she ever was of me. She made dismissive comments that crossed clear boundaries, and at times I felt more like I was being challenged or antagonized than supported. Instead of feeling heard, I often felt like I had to defend myself in a space that was supposed to be safe. Shelby did not create an environment of warmth or advocacy—only judgment. I wanted her to be my therapist because she presented herself to be a strong minded individual, but I never imagined she would end up using her strong personality to try to put me down. If this is how she responds to a client with emotionally steadiness, I worry deeply for anyone who comes to her with emotional fragility. I spent so much money on someone who embodied exactly the kind of energy I came to therapy to heal from. Just because I stayed respectful in times where my emotions were dismissed, it shouldn’t have made her feel entitled to treat a client with contempt and disrespect. I didn’t deserve this. I do not recommend Shelby to anyone seeking support or empowerment.

I have known several therapists over the years, and Julie Gayer Kris is certainly special.  I consulted her when my husband was in advanced stages of dementia, and she provided invaluable support and guidance, creating a safe, compassionate and supportive environment where I felt heard and understood.  She has an extraordinary ability to listen deeply and provide insights that resonated with me, helping me navigate the emotional challenges and find the strength and patience within me to deal with his condition. She also guided me to resources for both my husband and myself, and her holistic approach made a significant difference in managing the day-to-day realities of dementia care. When he died, she came to his memorial, and while we are not now consulting professionally, she continues to check in.  I highly recommend her.

Julie Gayer-Kris has a unique ability to make people comfortable, even when talking about difficult things. She listens with empathy and without judgement, and even finds appropriate ways to weave in humor, which I appreciate so much. Julie has a talent helping to manage anxiety, by guiding you to not just come to realizations about your anxious thoughts, but also concrete things you can do to keep moving forward in a new direction - this brings so much relief and healing. I always feel better after talking to Julie!

I have known Kathryn Grooms for many years as a colleague and can say that her work as a clinician and consultant is exemplary. Her knowledge and expertise is inspiring and I have frequently benefited from her insight and advice. She is warm, caring, and attuned. I refer clients to her without hesitation, knowing that they are in safe hands.
