We stopped by this store before our flight home. I think we had visited another location in New York before and really enjoyed it. They carry a lot of merchandise from Japan, especially stationery items. This Portland store is quieter but still has plenty of products, all well organized and easy to find. There’s even a robot that makes drinks, it’s fascinating to watch.

I heard that MUJI stands for “made under Japanese influence” and it seems to be true. This store offers a variety of Japanese products: clothes (men’s and women’s), cosmetics, household goods, travel essentials, snacks and sauces, cleaning supplies, storage containers, bedding, and my personal favorite: unique stationery. Muji pens are the best and I have one in every color. I also really like the sticky notes, masking tape, mini scissors, and pencil cases. The clothes are good quality and boast Japanese style (overfitted, boxy, muted colors, conventional). They also offer pajama sets and undergarments. The interior design of this store is brilliant with products hanging aesthetically from the ceiling and very precise attention to detail with the displays. The layout of the store feels like a maze with its tall ceiling and towering shelves, but the atmosphere is peaceful and calm. I highly recommend visiting Muji if you are looking for minimalistic lifestyle or high-quality, reasonably-priced home goods. I love this store.

Uncomfortable experience. I grabbed some storage bins and was in line behind three other customers to check out when an employee singled me out. They indicated I should go to the other side of the counter and skip the other customers in line. So I did that, and they disappeared. I waited for a few minutes and then returned to the line's end. The employee swung by where you enter to check out, and it looked like they would say something, but they left. By this point, I was next to check out when another employee set down boxes parallel to me, but a little away due to the display. These boxes looked about the same size as the bins I had in my hands. Nobody said anything, and I started to check out at the register. That employee wasn't talkative either. I did notice the first employee looked at the boxes and at me / the cashier, like they were about to say something. It would have been helpful for anyone to have communicated. I don't feel comfortable returning to this store now.
