I have adopted animals all my life, I have had three rescues, one SPCA, and two others that were extreme neglect cases from Texas and Kentucky also volunteered at the SPCA my entire childhood. In short, I am very experienced with rescues. Went to Nanaimo SPCA yesterday to see a dog needing a home, the volunteers welcome you with complaints about the staff. No one knew where dogs were, and staff were telling public “we are too busy to help”. Found the dog I wanted to meet by himself in a yard away from the facility with no lock or sign stating anything about not entering. Entered the yard and immediately met a beautiful dog that connected with my family and kids, spending about 20 minutes playing with us. A lady came out red faced and swearing about losing her job and we needed to leave. Regardless put in an application and was told I was a great fit from another staff member. Phoned the next day and was told they would not be moving ahead with our adoption because my wife was impolite to their staff that came out swearing in front of my 2 year old and 5 year old. Really sad to see the animals be put second to a group of lazy, emotional, self-important and controlling women collecting government paycheques.
sYour workers need to actually communicate properly with those that adopt about what’s going on and the parameters. Maybe hire some actual workers that are competent and not volunteers that forget about you while you’re in their private areas with animals and ones that actually answer your questions without making me feel stupid for even asking them. Will never use the Nanaimo SPCA again. Go Parksville or or cowichan.

FuzzyThe Nanaimo SPCA was wonderful helping us to find the perfect cat. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. Angela was wonderful, and very knowledgeable in giving advice and help in adopting "Big Dipper", now called Sam/Sammy. A few weeks later we adopted a relative of Sammy at the shelter. Her name was Aurora Borealis, now named Lily. She is a very sweet cat and a great addition to our family.
