They will not allow us to renew our mortgage without earthquake coverage. We live in Kelowna, BC. The last earthquake to cause any damage there was in 1909!!! The risk of an earthquake is ~ 30% in the next 50 years. I’m 54! I can understand coverage in an earthquake ZONE - yes - needed. But I can’t even opt out when I’m no where near an earthquake zone. It’s a choice in BC; not mandatory. They make it mandatory. Unreal. Absolutely unreal.

Just make sure that you are aware of what Interest Rate Differential (IRD) charges are. They make it virtually impossible for you to pay out your mortgage. You'll have to ride out the mortgage for whatever term you signed up for, after which you hopefully will be in a position to not have to go to a B lender.

This is the WORST lender I have ever used!! After paying 8 years on a property $1100 per month, I only paid off $8000. Insane!! They should be shut down; however, criminals like them make the world go round. BRUTAL...on a $173,000 mortgage, I paid $105,600 to Bridgewater Bank with only $8000 equity. Yikes. That was a bad business transaction.

After ten years of saving with Bridgewater, I need to say what a great outfit this is. Saving money is so easy. With a simple phone call to set up frequency and amounts, they'll automatically transfer money from my main bank to my high-interest savings account. I appreciate the inability to impulse-spend, since it requires a phone call and a couple of days to transfer money back into my bank's chequing account. I also appreciate that my money is completely safe here. I like that Bridgewater is based in Alberta and owned by the Alberta Motor Association. I've received excellent customer service each and every time I've called.
