Definitely the way to view this place is as more of a daycare with a library attached. It’s very loud with kids on the main floor and an open concept space. I’ve worked remotely from libraries all over the country, and I was quite disappointed in the layout as it is not conducive to studying, reading, or working. Definitely bring noise canceling headphones if you’re sensitive to sound. The daycare may be a real service to those in the community, and the staff seems pleasant. However, the layout/use of space could use a big overhaul that would make for a far better experience for everyone.
They were right- its a daycare library I love babies but the open area is so big full of kids crying so you need rly good noise cancellations. Also people dont stay quiet (snoring talking laughing) in the library 🥹staff are nice
I have been to libraries all over as I travel for Work, Studies etc. This has to be the top 3 worst libraries I have ever been too. Point of a library - read and study IN SILENCE. NOT READ AND STUDY WITH KIDS SCREAMING AND YELLING. This open concept is a terrible idea. Shame on the architect and designer that put the kids section right on the middle first floor. Good luck trying to get work done here. Just absolutely insane. Also hours are terrible, 6pm on a weekday?? its New York lol people work all hours of the night..
I have been coming to this Library since 2014 and the renovations that has been done is for the worst. I want to start off by saying that i love the staff and there’s a mixture of new staff members with old staff members that have been there since day one! (Impressive if I might add). For some odd reason, before the renovations the Library held a lot more books which meant a lot more of a variety to choose from. At this point, I have to travel to other Libraries to get a book because it seems as if this library just turned into a neighborhood daycare. 85% of the space is dedicated to a children’s area, children’s activities and claustrophobic with parents and caregivers with their strollers and screaming babies. There is just a sliver of books for adults/young adults and I am always left with the question: What really was the reason for this renovation? To have 2 floors, there isn’t much of anything. Highly disappointed, there should’ve been a community vote from the people who live in the heart of greenpoint and would definitely tell you that this upscale “scene” is not benefiting anyone but just for ONLY the aesthetic to try and fit in with what is popular today. This isn’t a library. It’s a private daycare. Start charging tuition at this point.
