Customer experiences
Canlis is an absolutely beautiful restaurant for a special occasion with your partner or family and a beautiful view of the city! The service is good and everything you would expect in a fine dining experience. The food is also quite good! I left off a couple of stars only for a few reasons: - the sides (potatoes) were a confusing plate that were overly rich and heavy and didn't make sense in combination with the meal - the knife served with the duck was too dull to cut into the meat - my partner and I were asked if this was a special occasion when we made the reservation and noted that this was our 5 year wedding anniversary but nothing for this occasion was really celebrated during our meal--something I find odd at an establishment at this caliber and that I considered a miss - the pumpkin spice dessert was almost delicious! It would have been perfect if it had just been edited a bit more. The chocolate mousse didn't balance the dish or really fit and was too bitter for the plate...it was a shame because without it the dish was delicious! - the restaurant was slammed the night we went (a server mentioned that they had 40 more covers than usual that night) so I completely understand this--but the pacing between courses was very off. Definitely much longer than they should have been. Again I'm not upset and the servers were very kind and upfront about this but worth noting. Outside of these things this place was great and the blueberry halo halo was so perfectly balanced it was the absolute star of the show to me! I think with some tweaks this place should be Michelin star level--just not quite yet and Michelin isn't in Seattle yet lol so they have time to get there! I would still recommend to others because I think maybe it was just an off night because of how busy it was and that it could be much better!
We had an incredible evening here. The service is top notch. Our waiter, Mack, knew everything about every item on the menu, and described them perfectly. We never felt rushed, even though we asked a lot of questions. The support staff was very stealthy at times, when I would realize I had new silverware but never saw them bring it. The entire staff are friendly and outgoing, and they all looked happy. The food was superb, and every dish was as beautiful as it was delicious. While the portions look small, all four of us were stuffed when we left, and we didn't have the salad. The sommelier was excellent, bringing us several different samples to try before we made a decision. The view is also top notch. It is absolutely a huge splurge and not something we would do often, but it's a great experience for a special occasion.
It was ok. Wouldn’t come back for an $800 meal. It was our 8 year wedding anniversary and it was swept under the rug, no one really cared. Dont expect anything for your anniversary. The couple next to us got a free bottle of champagne though for the ladies birthday. For anniversary really they don’t do anything. Food was good, can’t say it was bad. But we paid $800 so I’m not sure if it was worth it for us. We prefer to spend that on good omakase :) more enjoyable. What was really stunning is the glasses they served drinks in. Such stunning glass, I took pictures of the company so I can purchase later! That was the highlight of my night. Server was ok. Nothing special, just ok and average. We are used to better service. The two valet guys were outside laughing and chatting didn’t care for us. We went outside to wait for uber but I needed to use the restroom. The guys were right there doing nothing. They never open doors or ask how they can help. My husband was opening the door back and forth for me. Usually, at places like this valet takes care of you. It did not feel like a fancy Michelin restaurant but a college dorm of dudes laughing around being stupid. Maybe they don’t get paid? I honestly don’t know what they do but I would be embarrassed as the manager of this place. Please hire valet that has standards and maybe does bare minimum job. I’m standing right by the door … maybe open the door for me? Instead of standing right next to me and ignoring my presence… Overall, it was ok, food was good but nothing worth $$$. I was prepared to be blown away by the service atmosphere and food but it was just average. Food was more than average but the valet really ruined the vibe of the restaurant for us. We will not be coming back, you won’t feel special celebrating anything here.
tldr; uninspired tasting menu, disinterested vibe from staff I've been coming to canlis for the last 15 years, I usually try to visit at least once a year or catch any new updates, such as a new chef. I was interested to try the updated menu. Overall, the visit was average and each visit has noticeably trended down in quality over the years; and this without taking into account the steep price. View is still great, wonderful location, I guess that and the table side salad are the best things going for it now. One observation persistent throughout all the staff (with the notable exception of the table busser), I felt a really cold, sterile, uninterested posture in communication and conversation. * conversation with the sommelier to pick out a bottle for the evening, came off very cold and uninterested as noted above. made basic comments about price points but otherwise not interested to tailor any kind of a selection to my interests. I ended up just picking a selection on my own. presentation and opening of the bottle, more of the same. I would expect at least a little bit of conversation and highlights of a $500 bottle but fair enough * as far as the wine selection, I feel like there is a noticeable gap in options from the 200 - 600 range. it would be great to get a vintage closer to 15 - 20 years without having to go up to a $2,000 or $3,000 bottle or have to go with a magnum * for entrees, I had the pork belly, steak and blueberry? dessert.. it was fine, steak had kind of a weird texture, sides (carrots and potatoes) were similarly average, kind of checking the checkbox. best item was still the original table side salad
Canlis is a pacific northwest restaurant (us).
