This is a hostel, not a hotel, not a BNB. It is just about perfect for anyone who who is cool with shared spaces, such as you might have had as a kid at camp. It is very close to the Appalachian Trail and the C and O Trail, historic Storer College (1867 to 1955, founded to educate newly freed slaves), and Harper's Ferry, the site of John Brown's attempted insurrection. Cross Trails is in Maryland, but very close to "Almost Heaven", specifically the West Virginia part of the "Blue Ridge Mountain, Shenandoah River" made famous in "Country Roads".
An excellent place to stay! My dog and I did the camping option as we travel in a van, and that purchase comes with a shower. I also utilized their laundry option and the kitchen often. The kitchen has everything one could need to prepare a great meal and the place is very clean. Has a great view of the river, easy access to both the AT and C&O Canal trails and a 5 minute drive to Harpers Ferry NP. The guys that run the place are awesome, you could not ask for better hosts. There really is nothing negative I can say about the place. I stayed several times while I toured the area and always felt safe and comfortable. It’s also a great way to meet like-minded adventurers from all over the world. One of my new favorite respite spots during my travels. Thank you, Shack and I will see you again!
A special unique place. Friendly, comfortable, quite quiet. John was a good host. The communal kitchen was well equipped and clean. My private room small but fine. Faced the country road but heard very little car traffic: well sealed windows. AC across the hostel worked fine. Some cyclists. some through hikers from the AT. The outdoors space is a roomy bluff overlooking river (through treeline). Maybe 5 tents there on a Sunday. Supermarket in nearby Brunswick or in Charles Town.
I stayed here in the fall so most of the AT hikers had come and gone and it was a bit more quiet. The staff was lovely and the grounds were clean and charming. I chose to camp rather than a room, but my friends said the rooms were good. We made some breakfast in the morning and there was a generously stocked communal pantry. Thanks for the great stay!
