There is one major tip to avoid a bad experience. Always buy insurance directly from RentACarDirect, the price is quite reasonable. They check the car thoroughly upon return, so it's best to avoid unnecessary disputes.

Except that I did not go abroad, and did not agree to such an extortionate fee when the total rate was $90. I had to place a chargeback with my credit card company.

Totally scam! In February, we rented a car. We had it from the 10th to the 15th, planning to pick it up at noon and return it by 5 p.m., so we paid for an extra day, which is pretty standard. We dropped the car off at 5 p.m., but the office was closed. When we called, nobody answered, so we followed the instructions to leave the key in the dropbox outside. We even took a photo as proof. Then the trouble began. They wanted to charge us extra for returning the car after hours, claiming the day had passed. But we had already paid for that extra day, clearly stated in about 20 emails. Finally, they agreed not to charge us extra for the late return but said they would dock nearly $60 for parking fees. I was fed up, so I agreed, realizing there was no way out of this mess. And here's the kicker: I still haven't gotten my DEPOSIT back. I paid with my bank card, and they say they refunded the money and canceled the hold. But I've tried explaining, with all the evidence including bank statements, that the money hasn't hit my account. Since I used a bank card, they should be processing a refund, not just canceling the hold. But they don't seem to get it, and they're ignoring my emails to dodge giving me my money back. They're total scammers, completely unprofessional.
