I truly appreciate that the Y welcomes and includes people with disabilities in their programs — it’s wonderful to see. However, I was very concerned during my recent visit because there didn’t appear to be any supervision for the group in the pool. One participant was behaving inappropriately, and he needed staff assistance or guidance. I believe there should always be proper supervision to ensure everyone’s safety and comfort. My son and I should not have had to be subjected to that because someone was not supervising. The facility is also not very clean. We will drive across town to a different facility before we will go back.

I love this YMCA, but I wish they would reduce one of the swimming lanes in the pool. Currently only a relatively small section of the pool is reserved for “free swimmers” or casual swimming, and the rest is sectioned off for lane swimmers. The result is that a ton of people are crammed in this small space. I know YMCA is about fitness, but casual swimming is exercise too!

This YMCA is a great place to go if you have small kids--and want the staff to lose them. We left our 2-year-old son in the kids club and they left him outside by himself. On Friday 8/22, Faith was the employee in charge and she not only didn't follow the correct process for taking kids outside the building, she lost my 2-year-old. I arrived to pick him up and they couldn't find him. Faith finally remembered that she'd had the kids outside and found him out there alone. She claims that they'd just come back in from outside--but WHY DID IT TAKE FAITH 5 WHOLE MINUTES TO REALIZE THAT'S WHAT SHE'D DONE!? Aprele Gaddie, the GM at this location, was initially very responsive and apologetic about this terrible problem and assured us it would be handled. We returned today, 8/26, to drop our son off for another session and the SAME EMPLOYEE WAS THERE! We did not leave our son at the YMCA today because we obviously felt unsafe leaving him in that employee's care. After further investigation, we learned that the Louisville YMCA, as an organization, does not have a policy against losing your kids. According to Aprele, this is a novel incident and the Louisville YMCA Executive Committee declined to fire this employee for a "first offense." A couple things worth repeating/pointing out: 1-The correct process is to badge each kid out when they go outside and badge them back in when they return to ensure this exact thing doesn't happen. Faith decided that she was smart enough to just do it on vibes and her own memory. 2-Faith left my 2-year-old outside alone for an undetermined amount of time. All I have is her word that it was just a few minutes. 3-YMCA staff did not realize and fix this mistake--I did. If I hadn't shown up when I did, who knows how long he would have been out there alone? 4-Just a couple days earlier it was 95 degrees outside. This could have been much worse. 5-In what world is "losing your kid" a thing that needs to happen multiple times to get fired!? I know that in the grand scheme of things, my membership dollars are a pittance to the YMCA and this review only has so much reach, but I have cancelled my YMCA membership and will encourage others to do so at every opportunity.
